Walter’s Boundless Playground Is Open!
Press Release - Sep 21, 2009
(September 21, 2009; Canton, CT)--The Shoppes at Farmington Valley celebrated the opening of Walter’s Boundless™ Playground with a ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication Saturday morning, September 26.
“At The Shoppes at Farmington Valley, we consider ourselves to be an integral part of the local community – in doing so we must be mindful of how to be a better community partner,” said Denise L. Robidoux, retail property manager for The Shoppes at Farmington Valley. “We recognize the importance of setting an example for our generations to come. This inclusive, Boundless™ playground, will be the first in Connecticut, and the United States, constructed within a shopping center; a first for our company, WS Development; and hopefully, as we set the standard, the beginning of many for the shopping center industry.”
This seems only fitting since the national nonprofit, Boundless Playgrounds was started in Connecticut and the founder of that organization, West Hartford resident Amy Jaffe Barzach, worked for many years in the shopping center industry.
The playground is named “Walter’s Boundless Playground,” in honor of local resident, Walter Lowell, who did much to support youth golf and recreation in this area. The land that The Shoppes at Farmington Valley is located on was once a dairy farm that was later converted to a public golf course by the Lowell family. The original dairy barn is still a focal point of the shopping center. “In keeping with the recreation use that the land once had, we wanted to construct a play area that would benefit the community and be a place for children and families to enjoy,” said Dick Marks, partner, WS Development, the shopping center owner.
The Shoppes at Farmington Valley received a $10,000 “Make the Switch Grant - a PVC-Free Pledge Grant” - from UltiPlay Parks & Playgrounds and Playworld Systems to support the building of this playground. The remainder of the playground was funded by WS Development, with landscaping and site work generously donated by Winterberry Landscaping of Southington. |
