Popular NYC-based ice cream chain Van Leeuwen opening 3 Boston-area locations

An ice cream chain based in New York City known for its fresh ice cream that comes in a variety of creative flavors is shipping up to Boston for the first time.

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream is opening three Boston-area locations starting this spring. The scoop shops will be located in Chestnut Hill, Seaport and Harvard Square.

The Street Chestnut Hill spot, located at 55 Boylston St., is expected to open in time for the spring. The Seaport location (131 Seaport Blvd.) is opening in the summer while the scoop shop in Harvard Square (1 Brattle Square) will come in the fall.

“We love Boston and are honored to become part of the amazing culinary scene here,” Ben Van Leeuwen, co-founder and CEO, said in press release. “What drew us to Boston is the incredible architectural beauty, rich history and European style walkability and density. We’re excited to get to know the Chestnut Hill, Seaport and Harvard Square communities even more, and share good ice cream that makes you feel good.”

Van Leeuwen began when Ben Van Leeuwen, Pete Van Leeuwen and Laura O’Neill started scooping ice cream out of their yellow truck on the streets of NYC in 2008. The French-style ice cream (made with more than double the amount of egg yolks as standard ice cream) quickly gained a loyal following, the press release said.

Van Leeuwen has since expanded to more than 50 scoop shops in New York, California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, D.C., Colorado, Connecticut and Texas. The chain recently opened its first international shop in Singapore.

Van Leeuwen is known for its collaboration flavors such as Hidden Valley Ranch, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and BIGFACE Coffee Affogato in partnership with NBA All-Star Jimmy Butler.

Van Leeuwen’s menu, featuring more than 30 signature flavors, includes its award-winning Vanilla Bean, Honeycomb, Pistachio, Marionberry Cheesecake, Praline Butter Cake and Earl Grey Tea.

Aside from scoops, people can get sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, root beer floats, milkshakes and pints to-go. Popular vegan flavors include Banana Bread Pudding, Peanut Butter Brownie Honeycomb, Strawberry Shortcake and more.

Van Leeuwen also sells pints, ice cream bars and ice cream sandwiches at grocery stores across the country. People can order products for nationwide shipping on Van Leeuwen’s website.
